Fans certainly cannot wait for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight, the newest upcoming project from George R.R. Martin’s world of Game of Thrones. The story will follow Ser Duncan the Tall and his trusty squire, Prince Aegon Targaryen.

While the series is set to give viewers a glimpse into the mundane matters of the Seven Kingdoms, it is equally important as the original and the prequel HBO series. The Tales of Dunk & Egg will see the effects of the political development in the whole of Westeros.

What is Tales of Dunk and Egg All About?

Game of Thrones introduced a whole new world to fans when it premiered in 2011, and television has never been the same since it not only became a pop culture phenomenon but a major game-changer in the art of storytelling and filmmaking.

Because of its popularity and high demand, HBO was motivated to bring the prequel show House of the Dragon to life. It saw the epic Dance of the Dragons and other crucial events in the history of the Targaryen dynasty. While this and the original series delivered the most intense, even brutal and mind-blowing moments in the fant asy saga, the Tales of Dunk and Egg is right up there.

Duncan the Tall is one of the most famous knights in the entire Westeros. He was an ordinary man until a mercenary hedge knight took him under his care. In one of his numerous travels, he meets Egg, or the Prince Aegon Targaryen, later known as King Aegon V.

The story is set a century before the events in Game of Thrones, and fans would be surprised to know that Duncan the Tall is the ancestor of Brienne of Tarth. Egg, on the other hand, is evidently the forefather of the Targaryens.

Dunk and Egg’s meeting was indeed a fateful event. Had they never known each other, the silver-haired figures in Game of Thrones would not have Aegon V as their ancestor. In one of the tourneys, Duncan would strike Egg’s brother, Aerion Targaryen, and to save his life, he would defend himself through trial by combat. He would later duel with the heir to the throne, Prince Baelor, who would eventually get killed. So, if Baelor lived, he would ascend as the king and not Aegon V.

How are Dunk and Egg Related to Game of Thrones?

It is also worth noting that the later events in Dunk and Egg’s lives will face the downfall of the Targaryen dynasty. In fact, they will be involved in two of the five major Blackfyre Rebellions.

What’s also interesting is that King Aegon V challenged the tradition of Westeros. When his oldest son and heir to the throne, Prince Duncan the Small, chose love over his duty, it was the second son, Prince Jaehaerys, who ascended to the throne. Jaehaerys II is the father of King Aerys II, also known as the Mad King, and the grandfather of Rhaegar, Viserys, and Daenerys Targaryen.
