And although he has played many roles over the years, Selleck admits that the role that scared him the most was playing Dr. Richard Burke on “Friends.” While on “The Kelly Clarkson Show” in April, the actor admitted that he didn’t know what would happen with the hit NBC sitcom. He said, “I’m not surprised by what they call a table read. I have acted in Taxi for a long time but have not acted in a sitcom. And so, I’m really worried.”
Even with his illustrious career and long-running role on CBS’s “Blue Bloods,” few of his fans know that Selleck actually has another job outside the world of television. In fact, it’s something that has nothing to do with his acting career at all.
Tom Selleck has an avocado farm
Tom Selleck may be known as an icon to some – with a huge net worth – but to those who know him well, he’s just an ordinary avocado farmer and enthusiast . That’s right: Selleck works on an avocado farm, and according to Good Housekeeping, it’s a job he quite enjoys. He told the publication, “I live on a 63-acre avocado farm. So I like to go out and work on the farm, from fixing roads to clearing bushes. I hate going to the gym, so sweating outdoors inevitably leaves me sitting on a stationary bike staring at my belly button.” If that wasn’t enough, Selleck also said that, unlike the huge Hollywood salaries he regularly receives, he’s good at being an avocado farmer because he’s “cheaper than anyone who I can hire one to do that.”
And while some Selleck fans may see this as an easy side hustle, owning and working on an avocado farm has as many pros as it does cons. You might think that Selleck would be a big fan of chips and guacamole or, say, a lean and creamy avocado toast for breakfast, but apparently, that’s simply not the case.
But Tom Selleck is not an avocado fan
Back in 2012, Tom Selleck admitted that although he enjoys working on an avocado farm, you won’t find him eating one during his time off. He told People that the last thing he wants to eat is an actual avocado. He said, “Honestly, they make me laugh. But it’s fine. I will sell my share.” Furthermore, Selleck faced a major drought that killed his avocado trees in 2021.
When asked what he does with his free time now, he told Parade, “This It sounds silly, but I personally dug holes for probably 1,000 native California oaks. I have a whole family of oak trees – toddler oaks, young trees and after 20 years, mature trees. Watching them grow up is not something you can do in five minutes in this crazy world of instant gratification, but it is very gratifying.”
It’s a shame that the avocado farm isn’t what it used to be because surely Dr. Richard Burke had his ex-girlfriend Monica Gellar make amazing avocado hummus with the spare avocados, right?
