This Is So Embarrassing: Ellen Pompeo Hates Grey’S Anatomy’S Most Iconic Meredith Line

Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo revealed she doesn’t like one of the most iconic Meredith scenes in the series. Pompeo, who portrayed Meredith Grey since Grey’s Anatomy season 1, left the show as a series regular in season 19. However, Meredith’s storylines will always be remembered because of her central role for almost two decades.

Speaking with Variety, Pompeo divulged that she hates one iconic scene between Meredith and Derek Shepherd in Grey’s Anatomy season 2. In the scene, Meredith says the line, “pick me, choose me, love me,” which became a classic line in the series. However, Pompeo never wanted Meredith to make her now-iconic speech. Check out what Pompeo had to say below:

“Listen, I don’t know if you remember that I fought that speech so hard. That’s another really interesting thing about life — some things that I was so against, and I was like, ‘I can’t beg a man on TV! This is so embarrassing.’ And then it turns out to be one of the most famous scenes ever.

In the scene, I’m crying, but I’m really crying because I have to beg a man on television.”

Meredith’s Lasting Legacy On Grey’s Anatomy

In the same conversation, Pompeo revealed her biggest frustration with Grey’s Anatomy was how Meredith’s romantic relationships were written. Her criticism of the scene between Meredith and Derek in Grey’s Anatomy season 2 underscores her feelings toward Meredith’s relationships. Even so, Meredith’s time on Grey’s Anatomy was always a central part of the series.

Some of Meredith’s more memorable Grey’s Anatomy storylines involved her relationships, particularly her long-lasting marriage to Derek. However, their relationship was tragically cut short when Derek died following a car accident in season 11. As of Grey’s Anatomy season 19, Meredith is in a relationship with Nick Marsh, a transplant surgeon at Grey Sloan Memorial.

While some have criticized Meredith’s lackluster Grey’s Anatomy exit, the amount of trauma, grief, and drama Meredith has seen since Grey’s Anatomy season 1 justifies giving the character a break. It also means Pompeo gets to take a break from Meredith’s relationship drama for the time being. While Pompeo may not be a fan of Meredith’s speech from Grey’s Anatomy season 2, the moment still cements Meredith as the show’s heart, even after her departure as a series regular.
