This episode was one of the best season finales fans have seen in a long time.
Grey’s Anatomy often makes its fans cry, from the horrific hospital shooting episodes to the infamous plane crash. But even things that are less important to the show’s larger storyline can accidentally make them really sad out of nowhere.
Such was the case with the season 18 finale, which ended up being quite heartbreaking, much to the surprise of fans.
One of the most well done season finales in a long time, it had everything a fan of the show could wish for.
It begins with a foreshadowing of tragic things to come when a hospital supply truck gets into an accident, spilling life-saving blood for the hospital’s patients all over the road.
Things get worse when Kristen, the pregnant wife of Simon, a cancer patient who needs constant transfusions, suffers a placental abruption.
To save his wife and newborn son, Simon, who has the same blood type, sacrifices his life by giving them the remaining blood supply that was meant for him.
On the verge of death, he lives just long enough to see his baby for the first and last time, giving him one last kiss before he dies. This moment of bittersweet beauty touched not only the doctors, but most of the audience.
The drama was only heightened by Meredith’s flashbacks to her past, as viewers relived most of the show’s iconic moments with her.
In other storylines, the hospital loses its surgical residency accreditation, much to the anger of Miranda Bailey, and Owen and Teddy leave town to escape the possible repercussions of their actions.
All of this caused quite a number of fans to sob while watching this episode. T
he only thing that seemed unintentionally funny to some was the fake baby used for Simon and Kristen’s storyline, although they admit that it was a good decision by the show’s creators to keep the real babies out of harm’s way.
