The Rookie Leans Into The Grey’S Anatomy Formula For Upcoming Seasons

Could it go up to 20 seasons as Grey’s did?

If there’s one TV show that could teach another a lesson or two, it’s Grey’s Anatomy. Say what you will about the quality of the script and the cruel way it gets rid of characters, but you cannot deny the longevity of the medical drama hit. If it wasn’t doing well, it wouldn’t have been renewed for season 21. And now that it has, fans are bracing for more scandal.

Another ABC procedural, The Rookie, has only been on the air for 6 seasons, but has many fans who would take 14 more years of their favorite show in a heartbeat. Led by Nathan Fillion, The Rookie has already approached Grey’s biggest problem and has already confirmed that it will deal with it in the same way.

The Rookie Season 7 Cast Changes

The good news is that The Rookie will be returning to ABC for its 7th season, which will give the show plenty of room for improvement. The writers will also have just enough time to come up with more compelling storylines, as the show will not return until 2025, in the middle of the 2024/25 broadcast season.

The premise of The Rookie has been built on the rookie himself, John Nolan, trying to get into the LAPD and become the oldest rookie in the force. Fighting his mid-life crisis and trying to balance the hardships of training with personal struggles, Nolan has charmed viewers. However, after 6 seasons, he’s no longer a rookie and needs to be replaced.

When it came to the point where Meredith Grey and 4 other interns who started alongside her weren’t interns anymore, Grey’s Anatomy introduced the new set while still keeping the first group as interns. This way, the premise of the show didn’t really change that much, and viewers didn’t get bored with the same old faces.

First, The Rookie introduced Celina Juarez as the new rookie, and now it feels like a good time to add more newbies to the cast, showrunner Alexi Hawley teased in an interview with TVLine:

“We’re looking at the end of Celina’s 13 months, so to speak, at some point in the [coming] season, so I think it’s fair to say that there might be a new rookie or two showing up at some point,” he said.

If you didn’t have enough reasons to be excited about The Rookie’s comeback with season 7, this will definitely do the trick. By adding more rookies every other season and showing their progress, the show could secure as many seasons as ABC will allow without relying solely on Fillion.

If you don’t want to miss The Rookie season 7, be sure to keep an eye out for all the news and behind-the-scenes updates.
