Sophia Bush is ready to get her scrubs back on.
The actress, 42, will be joining Grey’s Anatomy for the hit show’s 21st season, PEOPLE confirms.
Bush will play Dr. Cass Beckman, who is described as an “amiable, fun and a little messy around the edges trauma surgeon” who works at Seattle Presbyterian. Her husband David Beckman is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Grey Sloan.
Her character will make her debut in the sixth episode of season 21, which airs Nov. 6, and it’s still unconfirmed whether her character’s husband has been cast yet.
The actress teased her debut on Grey’s in an Instagram post on Oct. 16, as she posted a video of her changing into scrubs inside her trailer.
“I just wasn’t done with my scrubs 💙 @greysabc,” she captioned the post.
This is not Bush’s first foray into the medical procedural world, as she led CBS’s Good Sam in 2022. The actress played Dr. Sam Griffith on the show, which ran for only one season, who found herself as the chief of surgery at Detroit’s Lakeshore Sentinel Hospital after her boss fell into a coma.
The series, which she called the “best experience” of her career in an interview with Insider in 2022, also saw Bush reunite with her One Tree Hill costars and friends, Hilarie Burton and Bethany Joy Lenz for a fun episode where Burton and Lenz played sisters, and Lenz was seeking treatment at Bush’s character’s hospital.
Season 21 of Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered on Sept. 26, is a historic one, as its renewal extended its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama and ABC’s longest-running primetime scripted series.
Star Ellen Pompeo, who has played Dr. Meredith Grey throughout the show’s entirety, is slated to appear in seven of the season’s episodes, following a more scaled-back role in seasons 19 and 20, PEOPLE confirmed over the summer.
The new season picked up right where season 20 left off, with Meredith (Pompeo) having resigned from her job at the hospital after Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen) discovered her secret Alzheimer’s research. Teddy Altman (Kim Raver), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) and Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) were also caught in the crosshairs of the controversy.
Showrunner Meg Marinis told PEOPLE ahead of the season 21 premiere that “a lot is hanging in the balance” this season.
“Everyone’s jobs are on the line and on top of that, they’re all grappling with various challenges in their personal lives,” she said. “I’m excited for fans to see how that all plays out for each of them. As for Meredith, even though she’s had good intentions, she’s crossed a line with Catherine and there will be consequences as a result.”
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
