One Grey’S Anatomy Storyline So Bad, It Made Shonda Rhimes’ Own Kid Drop The Show

The show didn’t age well.

It is always fascinating to think about what legacy the children of writers, producers, and other creatives will be able to explore. While some of the most prominent TV and movie personalities are happy to share their projects with their children when they reach a certain age, others aren’t so sure.

It can be difficult to navigate the sensitive issues that art sometimes tackles with your own children’s expectations, and TV star Shonda Rhimes, creator of shows ranging from Grey’s Anatomy to Bridgerton, has experienced this struggle firsthand.

Grey’s Anatomy’s Worst Storyline

Given the number of raunchy scenes in every single one of Shonda Rhimes’ projects, it’s hard to see her letting her young kids watch any of them. However, one of the writers’ daughters still managed to get her hands on Grey’s Anatomy.

Too bad, roughly one season into the show 12-year-old Emerson had to drop the drama since it became too icky to watch.

“So, my 12-year-old started watching Grey’s Anatomy this year, and I was coming out of my skin. She watched the first season, and then Cristina Yang had an ectopic pregnancy and she turned it off. She’s like, ‘I’m really upset that Cristina’s pregnant. I didn’t see it coming, and I think I need to wait and watch this again when I’m older,” Rhimes shared.

Considering how beloved Cristina Yang was to many viewers, Emerson certainly wasn’t the only one who was similarly affected by the show’s twist. Cristina’s childfree stance and general outlook on marriage and family was what made her character so appealing and relatable to so many, so viewers were shocked to see her suffer through this pregnancy.

According to Rhimes, her daughter was able to get over the initial shock and ended up continuing the show because she loved all the medical cases. Again, this reflected the majority of the show’s fans. Given the direction the show took after its second season, Cristina’s pregnancy was just a warm-up for a whole series of unsettling events.

Two decades later, Grey’s Anatomy continues to bring top-notch drama to fans’ screens. The show returns this fall for its 22nd season on ABC, so be sure to keep an eye out for news and updates.
