Married At First Sight groom Tim Calwell has broken his silence over the infamous cheating scandal his bride Sara Mesa was involved in.

The online business owner, 31, was left heartbroken after his wife Sara, 29, told him she had to go ‘puppy sitting’ – but was later revealed to be visiting an ex-boyfriend.

Calwell said in hindsight there were lots of clues that things were not right in their relationship, which he overlooked because he trusted Sara to be faithful.

‘She requested three days of time off from MAFS. I’m not too sure what she and her ex got up to or if they did anything physical,’ he told the Sit With Us podcast.

Tim added he later found out the puppy-sitting story was a lie, which made it difficult to believe anything Sara subsequently told him.

‘I’ve got her explanation about what happened but this is after the fact that she lied to me. Trust is such an integral part of a relationship and once it’s broken it is hard to mend.’

He added that following the scandal, things were never the same between him and Sara and they soon called time on their relationship.

It comes after Sara opened up about the aftermath of her infamous cheating scandal, detailing the emotional turmoil and public backlash she has faced.

‘Watching it all back has been really rough,’ Sara told Daily Mail Australia in March.

The Sydney-based nutritionist admitted that reliving her experience has prompted her to confront aspects of her behaviour she’s not proud of.

‘It’s made me feel really sad, especially for the way that I’ve treated Tim. I have so many regrets… It’s like putting up a mirror to a lot of the things that I need to work on myself, and in relationships.’

The days following the cheating revelations were particularly gruelling.

‘It was a super-emotional and stressful week,’ she said.

Since confirming they were no longer together, Tim has been anything but heartbroken following his split.
