When there’s nothing you can bring to the table, it’s better to leave altogether.
Ellen Pompeo has been one of the pillars of Grey’s Anatomy for as long as anyone watching the show can remember.
Dedicating the last 20 years of her life to the role of Meredith Grey, and then going on to become not only the actress, but also the producer of the show, Pompeo deserves all the gratitude from the fans.
However, all good things must come to an end, and Ellen Pompeo’s run as Meredith Grey is no exception.
Of course, this is a shocking thought for the show with Grey in the title, but the action that fans believe needs to be taken sooner rather than later.
With all the gratitude comes appreciation for Ellen Pompeo’s talent, and for the past few years she seems to have not only distanced herself from the show to take some much-needed rest and artistic freedom, but also to go a little less hard on her acting.
Meredith Grey, loved and cherished by so many, just doesn’t reach as many hearts as she once did.
The burnout that can come from doing something for so many years without a major break is completely understandable. It is also understandable that the producers would be cautious about letting go of the show’s main character.
However, this move may allow Grey’s Anatomy to continue to grow if the show is interested in doing so.
With a bunch of new interns coming in season 19, it seems like Shondaland is not opposed to the idea of rebooting the show and starting over with different characters and arcs. But to do that, you have to be willing to let go of the past.
Especially when almost every appearance of Meredith elicits no emotion other than annoyance from the audience.
Whether or not Grey’s Anatomy would be willing to take such a risky step and remove Ellen Pompeo from the cast to work solely behind the camera as a producer, we’ll have to wait and see.
There is no official word on when the anniversary season will return, but it has already been pushed back to midseason by ABC due to the writers’ strike.
