House of the Dragon has been a thrill ride all throughout season one, and while everyone eagerly awaits the second season, fans have been busily sharing their theories and opinions on Reddit.
A recent exciting discussion emerged following a poll to determine who is the best husband in HotD. Almost 4,000 people voted between the seven contenders, with the results being surprising.
Let’s start at the bottom, those who got the fewest number of votes before finding out which man emerged victorious. Aegon received a mere 77 votes, with his father, Viserys not faring much better on 280.
Next up was Daemon, earning 420 votes, and considering he murdered his first wife, many were surprised he earned that much praise.Interestingly, coming in next with 591 votes are Lucerys “Luke” and Jacerys “Jace,” even though they are unmarried children at the end of season one. And considering the fate of Luke, it seems almost cruel to include him in this poll…
This brings us to the top two, the last two contenders being Velaryon men, Corlys and his son, Laenor. Before we reveal who claimed the top spot, it is worth taking a closer look at them.
Laenor was gay, so never bedded his wife, Rhaenyra. But, to his credit, he was happy to accept the reality of the situation and look the other way when she took lovers to satisfy her needs.
And he never attempted to deceive her, being honest from the start about his sexual orientation.
The realm believes Laenor is dead by the end of the first season, owing to a clever ploy, which allowed Rhaenyra to marry her uncle.
Whether Laenor was complicit in this, or whether the conspirators had any idea that Laenor survived is still a mystery that may be revealed in the second season. Laenor earned himself 874 votes.
Finally, Corlys is straight, fathering two children with his wife Rhaenys, and is a fierce and brave warrior. He is devoted and loyal to Driftmark yet lacks husband points because he abandoned his family for years, having them fearing he was dead.
Sure, he had important fighting to do, but that does not excuse straight-up ditching his family the way he did.
But did Corlys earn more votes than his son? He sure did. He scored 1,600 votes and took out the gold medal for best husband.
But fans have also raised an important point. Even the man who earned the most votes is still a disappointing husband. He was too ambitious for his own good, and it cost him dearly, ultimately losing both of his children (well, so far as he knows, anyway).
Corlys may have won the poll, but it only proves a key point. For women, it sucks to be married in Westeros.
