Grey’s Anatomy couldn’t wait until Halloween to scare us. In Thursday’s episode, it sent Levi and Lucas via chopper to pick up a little girl named Ofelia who’d fallen off of a moving tractor. As her condition went from bad to bloody awful — emphasis on the bloody — stormy weather necessitated an emergency landing. Did everyone survive? Read on, and we’ll discuss…
‘SOMEONE GET ME A GURNEY!’ | As “You Make My Heart Explode” began, Jo was reeling from the revelation that she was having twins and Levi, from the shock that James was married. #awkward for the chaplain and Link. In interns news, we learned that Mika’s sister Chloe was recovering well. Teddy and Owen were having a tough time in couples therapy, with the latter grumbling about the notion of having scheduled sex. (Hey, better than none!) At the hospital, Winston returned Monica’s nightie to her — but it turned out not to be hers. Enter Amelia, sending the weirdness into the stratosphere. Filling in as co-chief resident for some reason, Ben assigned Blue grunt duty; he had a s—t-ton of paperwork to complete. It would have to wait, though, as he soon was distracted by Mr. Johnson, a janitor who collapsed in the hall.
Shortly, Monica informed Lucas and Levi of the helicopter ride that was in their immediate future. You can probably guess which of them was scared to death by the prospect, right? Schmitt rose to the challenge, however, reassuring Ofelia’s parents as they were forced to leave her in the doctors’ care for the flight. As it always is, time was of the essence. Soon, the weather was worsening as quickly as Ofelia’s condition. Phosphate poisoning from playing in the fields, maybe? TBD. While Monica tried to convince Amelia that what she’d walked in on between her and Winston hadn’t been what it had looked like, Levi and Lucas desperately tried to treat Ofelia in the air. Risky, sure, but “I’m in,” said Adams, as always.
‘YOU CAN FIGHT HER ON THIS, BUT YOU WILL LOSE’ | As Bailey stepped in to help Blue treat Mr. Johnson, Jo freaked out even more over the prospect of having more babies than she and her boo already had or even had expected. Link tried to be supportive, but his partner didn’t need the variety of comfort that he had to offer. At least he was wanted on Mr. Johnson’s case. Upon scanning the patient, it was found that he was in horrific shape, at risk of a joint completely degenerating. “Your insurance covers” the surgery, Blue told him. Kwan was especially understanding of the shortcomings of the system. But what really sold Mr. Johnson on going under the knife was Simone suggesting that he think of the impact on his son.
Meanwhile, Mr. Reilly, the music teacher who was left in dire straits last week, needed to have a lung removed. A lung? Yes, a lung, Winston decided. Mr. Reilly would have to wait for a transplant to pick up a second one. “What if I can’t ever play again? What if I can’t teach?” he asked. “It’s my life.” Winston said that missing a lung wouldn’t take that away from him, but um… would it? In surgery, Ben fussed that he wasn’t being treated like a fourth-year resident, at which point Ndugu showed him what a full-fledged doctor-doctor was capable of. Why was he so invested? Mr. Reilly didn’t have any family, and Winston didn’t want him to feel alone.
‘WE CAN WAIT TILL HE CRASHES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT’ | Treating Mr. Wheeler, whose heart needed draining, Teddy and Owen endeavored to get him sprung in time for his 40th anniversary. Sensing the tension between the marrieds, Mr. Wheeler suggested that Hunt get his missus flowers on the way home. Oh, if only it were that simple! Later, Richard, also picking up on the stress on the union, listened to Teddy venting without immediately admitting that she was. “You’ve already been through a war together,” Webber reminded her. “You can get through this.” Next thing we knew, Mr. Wheeler wasn’t just bleeding, he was splattering all over Owen, Teddy, his own wife… everyone in the room. Somehow, this… helped?
In mid-air, Levi and Lucas did their damnedest to save Ofelia’s leg. And it looked like they had pulled it off, too — just in time for the pilot to announce that she was going to have to try for an emergency landing. Needless to say, Ofelia’s folks were scared to death to find out that they had beat her to Grey Sloan. After Amelia failed to reach Adams and Schmitt by walkie-talkie, Monica flipped, rushing toward the worst case scenario. “Sometimes you have to accept the situation at face value,” Amelia said, “so you can keep moving forward.” Just then, Levi and Lucas arrived with Ofelia. Metaphor much? At end of day, Monica asked whether Levi believed peds was his calling. In short, yes. Hell, yes. After what he’d pulled off that day, Beltran was sold and willing to help him. “You know more than you think,” she told him. “Trust yourself.”
‘I CAN STILL FEEL IT IN MY SOCKS’ | In other developments, Simone got on Blue’s case about voting — seriously, dude? — and the two of them urged Richard to find a way to help Mr. Johnson with his sickle cell. Natch, they did so in front of some of the hospital’s investors. After Mr. Wheeler’s heart exploded all over them, Teddy and Owen agreed to go on a date. Crisis averted. Mr. Johnson found out from Richard that he was going to be treated for sickle cell — surprise. His son has special needs, though; how would that work? TBD. Looking to bond with Winston, Ben sent Bailey home solo; Warren was finding his way again. As the hour drew to a close, Levi challenged James about Ryan — and learned that the chaplain’s husband was dead. “Did you think I was cheating?” James called Levi the best thing that had happened to him in a long time. Chasing after Amelia, Monica thanked her for being there and tried to explain about Winston. But Amelia said it wasn’t really her business. As for Jo and Link, they fought-discussed her fears and reaction to them. “We’re supposed to be partners,” he reminded her. “What’s going to happen when we actually have them?”
And in our last few seconds, the designated new “MerDer” smooched as Simone discovered that Lucas had cooked dinner for them. “I’ve had an extremely long day,” he said. “And I want to end it with you.”
