Some surgeries are too high-stakes for even superhero pose to help. So we learned in Thursday’s Grey’s Anatomy as Amelia felt the pressure of operating on 9-year-old Dylan with her mother (guest star Piper Perabo) begging her to work a miracle and Monica assuring her that she could. Amelia’s pulled off the impossible before. Did she yet again? Read on…
JULES SAW A NEW SIDE OF WINSTON | As “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone” began, Winston insisted to Richard that there was nothing more than mentorship going on between him and Jules. (Sure, Jan.) But as the twosome treated Spencer (Bold & Beautiful’s Christian Weissmann), whose lung had been sprung from his chest in a car accident, it became increasingly obvious that there was some caring involved. Though Winston snapped at Jules that “I’m not your co-intern BFF” when she bristled at seeing Spencer’s deadbeat dad pocket his rent money, Maggie’s ex later attacked the man upon catching him drinking away his son’s hard-earned cash. Only after Jules pulled Winston off of Spencer’s father did Ndugu admit that, like Millin and their patient, “I have a difficult dad, too. Usually, I keep all that buried deep… Turns out it’s not buried as deep as I thought.” Winston was clearly shaken but still turned down Jules’ offer to get a decaf and decompress. The following day, he even pawned her off on Richard, who cheerfully informed the resident, “I’ve got three feet of bowel incarcerated in a man’s groin.”
JO AND LINK SET A DATE | The engaged docs teamed up to help a bride-to-be named Mariana, whose endometriosis pain was threatening to upend her imminent-and-getting-more-imminent wedding to fiancé Edgar. The twosome was known around Grey Sloan as the “NICU couple” because their moms had become besties in the hospital upon giving birth to them. But after Mariana underwent surgery, she awakened to the realization that the love story at play was her and Edgar’s mothers’, not theirs. Off screen, she broke up with her intended, which left Jo with a brilliant idea: She and Link should tie the knot at Livingston Manor as Mariana and Edgar had intended to. Sure, the opening was in four days, but they could pull it off, right? Absolutely, he said. Although “if my mom’s coming, we need drinks!” Hey, nobody said that there wasn’t work to be done — and quickly!
SIMONE AND LUCAS HIT A ROUGH PATCH | Bailey was livid with Blue when he chewed out a prospective intern who had leapt into action to insert a chest tube in a coding patient’s… liver. (I’m no doctor, but even I knew that that probably wasn’t right.) Once Kwan explained to Bailey what had happened, her temper cooled. “Well,” she said, “I guess we dodged a bullet.” Simone didn’t, though. After Blue let slip to Lucas that Griffith had intended to ask her beau to move into Mika’s empty room — which she hadn’t — he was all pissy about it. Simone tried to explain that, in the wake of what had happened with Trey, she’d freaked a little when Lucas had started mapping out their future. But he was so crankypants that he didn’t even want to get dinner with her. (All together now: Grow up, dude.)
AMELIA’S TRIUMPH ENDED IN TRAGEDY | Before performing surgery on Dylan, Amelia suffered what seemed like a panic attack. A moment of pause, at very least. Monica tried to be there for her, but Amelia wasn’t in a place where she could accept the support. “I am the face [her parents] will remember if something happens to their kid,” she said. But it appeared that in the end she had managed to do the impossible. Once it seemed like Dylan was in the clear, Amelia admitted to Monica that she’d freaked because Derek had attempted to do what she’d just done. “My brother couldn’t. He tried a few times. In my eyes, he could do no wrong.” So she had had a hard time believing that she could accomplish something that he couldn’t. Sadly, at the end of the hour, Dylan appeared to be catatonic — and she was coding. To be continued…
