After sparks flew between Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) and Winston Ndugu (Anthony Hill), it was anything but smooth sailing for the pair.
On the May 1 episode of Grey’s Anatomy, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) had his eye on Jules and Winston Ndugu after catching them returning from their time on the rooftop together.
The attention didn’t go unnoticed by Wiston, who told Richard, “Listen, I know that you think there’s something going on between me and Dr Millin…And I just want to clear it up. I’m her mentor. She’s my student. Nothing more.”
The trio then treated a man named Spencer, whose lung had herniated out of his chest following a car accident. Spencer’s dad arrived at Grey Sloan, and Jules and Winston observed him stealing money from his son’s wallet. Jules wanted to confront him, but Winston told her that Spencer “needs us more in the OR.”
Past Demons
In the OR, Jules continued to voice her disdain for the actions of Spencer’s father while recalling her own childhood trauma from going on a “drug run” with her father.
Finally, Winston had had enough of her remarks, saying, “Are you done? Because I’m not your co-intern BFF, I’m chief of the cardiothoracic department. I don’t get messy in my patients’ lives, and I don’t gossip with my mentees. I keep my head down and I do my job, and I suggest you do the same. If I hear another word about it, you’re off my service.”
Despite his speech to Jules, Winston couldn’t hold back when he found Spencer’s father drinking outside the hospital. He lost his cool and yelled, “Your son almost died today..You’re the parent, you were supposed to take care of him, provide for him, keep him safe.”
After Jules pulled Winston away, he admitted, “I have a difficult dad too, and usually I keep all that buried deep, especially when I run into people like that who don’t do right by their kids. Turns out it’s actually not buried as deep as I thought.”
However, he turned down her offer for coffee and said they both needed sleep instead. He later reassigned Jules rather than working together again.
A Couple in Turmoil
Benson “Blue” Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.) inadvertently informed Lucas Adams (Niko Terho) that Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) had planned to ask him to move in before he had scared her off with his plans for the future.
Lucas then confronted Simone and asked her about the vacant room in her house. She skirted the issue and told him they were still figuring out what to do with it.
He later tried a more direct approach, asking, “Why didn’t you ask me about moving in?” She replied that his moving in was “one option in a long list of options.”
“We haven’t even known each other for a year. Can we just enjoy where we are right now?” she said, to which he replied, “Are you enjoying this?”
Later, Simone finally opened up to Lucas, saying, “I was gonna ask you to move in the other night when you started talking about our future. It just scared me…Last time I planned a future with a boyfriend, my life exploded. I didn’t leave it all behind. Rebuild from the ground up. I’m just not sure I’m ready to open myself up to that again.”
“I love you and I want a future with you,” Lucas responded, to which she said, “I just need a little more time.”
No Time to Waste
Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) treated a woman named Marianna, who was getting married in four days. She called upon Atticus “Link” Lincoln (Chris Carmack) to help when she realized her endometriosis had invaded her pelvic bone.
After learning of her diagnosis, Marianna’s fiancé asked him to tie the knot at the hospital before her surgery, but she hesitated and the doctors decided to move forward with the procedure as planned.
While recovering from the successful surgery, Marianna admitted to Jo that she realized she couldn’t marry her fiancé just because they had been “destined to be together since birth” after their moms met while they were both in the NICU at Grey Sloan.
Jo reminded her it was just a “party” when she worried about cancelling their wedding plans, adding, “Take it from someone who’s gotten married for the wrong reasons. It always catches up with you.”
Jo then suggested to Link that they take the couple’s wedding venue and tie the knot in four days. Listen, I love you, and I can’t wait to marry you, and that’s all that matters. And the wedding is just the icing on the cake,” she said, and he agreed.
Living in Her Brother’s Shadow
Meanwhile, they also assisted Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) and Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone) with the treatment of a young girl, named Dylan, with an abnormal cluster of blood vessels in her brain.
After Dylan panicked about the surgery and her parents debated if it was the right thing to do, Amelia admitted to Monica that she had her own fears about the surgery.
When Monica tried to reassure, Amelia said, “I don’t need to hear how good I am or how many successes I’ve had…I am the face they will remember if something happens to their kid. I am the one who will never forget it if I kill her on the table. So when I say I need a minute, I need a damn minute.”
Amelia pulled off the surgery and admitted their hesitations came from her brother Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) not being able to complete a similar procedure. She told Monica, “My brother couldn’t, he tried a few times, and it freaked me out, because in my eyes, he could do no wrong. So if he couldn’t do it, what chance did I have?”
“As someone who’s never met your brother and who only compares you to you, I can say with full confidence that I would bet on you every time,” Monica responded.
The episode concluded with Dylan experiencing complications and Lucas calling a code blue as he attempted to save her.
Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC.
