Ellen Pompeo is ditching Meredith Grey’s scrubs for her new role in the Hulu series Good American Family. Pompeo, best known for her portrayal of the titular character in the long-running ABC medical drama Grey’s Anatomy, is starring in the new series for the streamer in which she plays an adopted parent of a child that may not be as she seems.
Hulu just released the first trailer for Good American Family, and announced the series will premiere on March 19 with the first two episodes of the eight-episode limited drama series dropping that day. The show, which was previously going by the title Orphan, is inspired by a true story of Natalia Grace and the couple who adopted her believing she was a child with dwarfism. However, the couple started to think that she may not be who she appears to be.
Pompeo stars as Kristine Barnett along with The Morning Show’s Mark Duplass as her husband, Michael Barnett, the couple seeking to adopt Natalia Grace. Imogen Faith Reid plays Natalia Grace in the series, which also stars Psych’s Dulé Hill and Sarayu Blue (Velma). Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks recurs in five episodes of the series.
“Choosing to Con Us” Pompeo’s Character Feels Duped in the Trailer
In the trailer for Good American Family, everything starts out well as the Barnett family decides to adopt Natalia Grace, but things take a turn and Pompeo’s character says, “I don’t think she’s a little girl,” and “She’s choosing to con us.” The series was created by Katie Robinson. Sarah Sutherland serves as executive producer. Pompeo is also an executive producer on the show. Good American Family is produced by 20th Television.
Series creator Robbins and Sutherland serve as showrunners on the series. Pompeo produces under her Calamity Jane production banner with Laura Holstein. Other executive producers on the series include Andrew Stearn, Dan Spilo, Niles Kirchner, and Mike Epps. The pilot episode was directed by Liz Garbus.

The series’ official logline from Robbins reads: “Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, a mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.”
Grey’s Returns in March
Fans of Pompeo’s Grey’s Anatomy won’t have to wait too much longer for the midseason premiere of the 21st season of the show. It is set to debut on March 6 on ABC. Grey’s Anatomy streams on Hulu. Good American Family will stream on Hulu on March 19.
