Meredith deserved so much more according to fans.
Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo has officially left the project where she spent almost 20 years.
However, the show did not close down after losing such an important character, and episodes continued to air as usual without beloved character Meredith Grey.
Grey’s Anatomy showrunner and writer Shonda Rhimes immediately commented that the viewers will still have a chance to see Meredith, and Pompeo will definitely appear as a supporting character.
According to plot, Meredith moved to Boston and got a job at a new Alzheimer’s research clinic.
Medicine is always about people. That is why Grey’s Anatomy, a show about doctors that claims to be authentic, also focuses on characters.
Grey’s Anatomy is loved primarily because all the doctors are ordinary people with their own quirks, flaws and problems.
This is why viewers continue to empathize with their favorite characters even after 19 seasons. In Grey’s Anatomy, no one is immune to leaving the show for one reason or another, and Meredith Grey is no exception.
In such a long time on the show, Meredith has become an iconic female character whose ups and downs have been watched by millions.
Hence, when fans discovered that Ellen Pompeo was leaving the show, they expected an emotional and dignified farewell for the character.
However, it turned out to be rather vague and too ordinary, as if it was not the main star of the show who was leaving, but one of the many supporting characters, which caused a lot of outrage among fans who felt that Meredith deserved much more.
Apparently, one of the showrunners, Krista Vernoff, noticed the global discontent on the social media and decided to comment on such a plot decision.
“It wasn’t a farewell episode, it was a leaving-Seattle episode, because we knew we were going to see Meredith again this season and more next season as well. So it was a different kind of farewell than some that we’ve done. […] We wanted a sweet ‘see you later’ kind of thing for Ellen,” Krista told TVLine.
However, even after the commentary, many still disagree with the rather unemotional farewell and still believe that the writers missed a great opportunity to pay tribute to the actress for so many years spent filming Grey’s Anatomy.
The reality did not match the expectations of the fans at all, and it is sad that there will not be a second chance to say a proper goodbye to the most recognizable doctor on television.
