Grey’s Anatomy season 19’s new batch of interns already proved to share many similarities with the original five, and living together would be yet another parallel between the new interns and the original MAGIC. By focusing on each of the new interns, Grey’s Anatomy season 19 avoided past seasons’ mistakes and solidly developed the new class, showing that they could win the audiences’ hearts just like Meredith, Alex, George, Izzie, and Cristina did at first in Grey’s Anatomy season 1. Having some of them share living quarters would provide even more insight into them, just as it did for George, Meredith, and Izzie in Grey’s Anatomy season 1.
Grey’s Anatomy season 19 already shed the layers of some interns’ lives, unveiling Simone’s (Alexis Floyd) complicated history with Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and Jules’ (Adelaide Kane) intimate knowledge of one of the attendings. Lucas’ (Niko Terho) personal life was undoubtedly the most talked about, given his connection to Amelia and Meredith, while Benson (Harry Shum Jr.) and Mika’s (Midori Francis) lives are the least known as Grey’s Anatomy season 19 still hasn’t shown them outside work. With most of the action in Grey’s Anatomy happening in the hospital, having some interns live together would be the perfect callback to the original five and show a different side of the interns.
A Throwback To The OG Interns
Before George and Izzie’s arrival, Grey’s Anatomy season 1 focused mostly on Meredith’s difficult relationship with Ellis and the struggle to reconcile her memories of Ellis and having to take care of her after Ellis’ Alzheimer’s diagnosis. Coupled with Meredith’s inability to keep a work-life balance, having just started at Seattle Grace, audiences only saw her facing those challenges or Meredith and Derek’s romantic interactions. However, one of Grey’s Anatomy’s strongest feats eventually proved the original five’s unity and the way they were each other’s chosen family, and that wouldn’t have been possible unless some of them lived together.
Given that their internships at Seattle Grace brought out their competitive sides, having George, Meredith and Izzie share living spaces created a setting far from the hospital where they could get to know each other. Bonding over watching Ellis’ old surgeries in Grey’s Anatomy season 1, supporting each other on difficult days, and even the fact that Ellis’ house would become the place where almost everyone lived at one point made their unique relationships blossom. Without them sharing Ellis’ house, iconic Grey’s Anatomy moments synonymous with their friendships, like Meredith and Cristina’s dance-it-out routines, wouldn’t have been possible or would have looked quite different.
Mika, Lucas & Simone Need Better Living Situations
Grey’s Anatomy season 19 clearly showed how some interns struggle with their living conditions, so having them live together wouldn’t just be a fitting throwback to Grey’s Anatomy season 1’s Izzie, George, and Meredith. With Mika living in a van, Simone finding it challenging to be her best professionally being affected by her grandmother’s Alzheimer’s, and Lucas avoiding sharing that he’s a Shepherd at all costs, having them live together would solve many of their problems. This way, not only would they be placed in an optimal learning environment being less focused on their issues, but Grey’s Anatomy could also have the chance to show the new interns’ different facets.
