Grey’s Anatomy is seeking a new cast member for its roster just a couple of months after two major names were confirmed to be leaving.
TVLine reports that the ABC drama is adding a new gay male chaplain to the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital team.
Both his character name and the actor who could be playing him currently remain a mystery.
However, he’s described as openly gay and a superhero fanboy and is expected to recur throughout season 21.
Fans will be excited to see Grey’s Anatomy increase its LGBTQ+ representation, though the news comes after a disappointing update for the new season.
Earlier this year, both Jake Borelli, who plays gay doctor Levi Schmitt, and Midori Francis, who plays bisexual doctor Mika Yasuda, were confirmed to be bowing out soon.
They’ll both be returning for season 21, but only for as long as it takes to wrap up their respective storylines.
Viewers are keeping their fingers crossed for a satisfying conclusion after Levi pursued a pediatrics fellowship and Mika nearly shared a kiss with her friend Jules (Adelaide Kane) in the finale.
Sadly, the newcomer may have lost out on a potential love interest in Levi, so don’t expect his storyline to turn romantic just yet.
There’s still reason to celebrate, though, as the show’s iconic lead Ellen Pompeo will be back as Meredith Grey for at least seven episodes next season.
TVLine has reported she could appear in as many as 14 outings in the 18-episode instalment.
Another familiar face will also be making a comeback. Following his crossover to spin-off Station 19, doctor-turned-firefighter Ben Warren (Jason George) will be back as a doctor again.
He’ll be returning as a series regular seven seasons after departing the flagship drama.
Plus, if Grey’s new character proves popular there’s no reason another gay character couldn’t join the drama for some romance later down the line.
