MARRIED at First Sight or Married at First Fight?
With every past successful MAFS love story, there is a disaster-filled failed relationship right behind it.
Catastrophic rows have led to countless complaints from disturbed viewers over bad, mad and shocking behaviour.
MAFS UK has come under fire following its latest episodes, which saw viewers express outrage over some controversial moments.
Here’s the juiciest confrontations between couples from the UK to Down Under…
‘Vile’ bullying
According to Ofcom, a total of 161 complaints were racked up over MAFS stars Polly Sellman vs Hannah Norburn in the current series.
Viewers were particularly upset over two separate storylines.
The show recently received 71 complaints, with the majority focused on alleged bullying from Polly towards Hannah.
Later in October, another 91 complaints were logged concerning comments made by Richelle Cade to her husband Orson Burse during the commitment ceremony.
Viewers berated Richelle for her ‘bullying and vile’ actions towards her estranged husband.
She told the experts in a condescending leaving speech: “Before I came into this process I asked for a strong, intelligent man who has a bit of integrity, and I haven’t found that in Orson at all.
“I find him quite weak-willed, you really aren’t as sharp as you think you are.
“It’s pretty obvious I think to most people that you’re a bit simple. He definitely lacks any shred of integrity. So, one week too late, but it’s obvious – leave.”
Rose-tinted glasses
Gemma Rose Barnes and Matt Murray joined MAFS UK a third of the way through the seventh series in 2022.
Gemma soon found out the truth about husband Matt’s connection with another bride Whitney Hughes.
The other couples were split on the pair’s actions, with some branding Matt as “disrespectful.
Gemma was left fuming and the pair ended up having an expletive-fuelled row in front of the other contestants.
Viewers slammed the tattooed barber and branded him a “bully”.
Matt and Whitney later shared a romantic kiss on a bridge before spending the night together.
Both Gemma and Duka were left devastated to find out their spouses had cheated on them in the tense show.
He was also accused of treating his other MAFS ex-girlfriend Marilyse Corrigan “appallingly” and “gaslighting” her by fans on social media.
‘Controlling behaviour’
Worcestershire’s George Roberts and April Banbury married in the UK in 2022.
The former Ms Great Britain 2020 ended up reporting her husband to the police for “emotional abuse”.
Police investigated him over allegations of harassment and coercive control, the Met said at the time.
The Sun told how three of his ex-girlfriends had raised concerns after spotting him on a trailer for the series.
George denied any wrongdoing.
The Met Police said: “A 40-year-old man was arrested in on Thursday, September 29, on suspicion of controlling and coercive behaviour.
“He was taken to a police station and bailed pending further enquiries.”
‘Gaslighting’ row
Melissa Rawson and Bryce Ruthven appeared on the 2021 season of Married at First Sight Down Under.
Their relationship got off to a perfect start with a fairytale wedding – but things soon got dark.
Viewers watched the couple fall out over Bryce allegedly having a ‘secret girlfriend’.
The drama sparked an official investigation from the Australian Communications and Media Authority.
“Bryce went on the show for a bit of fun, to hopefully find love and boost his radio career a bit,” a source told The Sun.
“Instead, he destroyed his reputation, became the show’s most hated groom ever and was involved in endless scandals. At one point it was dubbed ‘The Bryce show’ by the crew on set.”
Bryce claimed producers “deliberated went out of their way to manufacture storylines” and portray him badly, and contemplated taking legal action.
However, the couple are officially married now and the parents of twin boys Levi and Tate.
The ‘most-hated bride’
Ines Basic and Bronson Norrish appeared on MAFS Australia in 2018.
The former stripper’s short-lived ‘marriage’ was one of the most volatile relationships on series six of the reality show, with Ines showing little interest in him from the start.
Viewers turned on her after her constant digs at her partner followed by her fling with show bad boy Sam Ball.
She was labelled the “most hated bride ever”.
The star claimed producers cut the moment that Bronson said he was “into open relationships”.
Bronson claimed the show had a lasting impact on some of his co-stars, with at least three still seeing psychiatrists.
She previously admitted: “I lost all my body weight. I had to be carried from scene to scene I was so weak.”
The star went on: “I look so remorseless and like I don’t care. But Bronson was into open relationships… They just didn’t air that part.”
The Aussie revealed she attempted suicide during filming.
She came under fire for secretly hooking up with Sam Ball in an ‘affair’ but he claims it was completely staged.
The ‘villain of the show’
Whitney Hughes married Duka Cav on MAFS UK in 2022.
Viewers vowed to call TV watchdog Ofcom over Whitney’s treatment of Duka.
The PA from St Albans was paired with Duka Cav and was branded the “new show villain” after arguing with another bride in the first episode and mocking her groom’s Yugoslavian name.
One viewer even went as far as to call Whitney the “worst bride ever” after she threatened to pull out of the wedding.
The Married At First Sight UK star told him: “I’m really bad with names.”
A surprised Duka replied: “You can’t remember my name?” and Whitney then called out a series of names, saying: “Dipsy? Datcha? Dukna?”
Whitney also threatened to pull out of the wedding at the altar and rolled her eyes when Duka said his vows.
One person wrote on social media: “Wow @Channel4 really did Duka dirty. Your experts really went & matched a sweet gentleman with that Whitney, who’s a self-centred rude and disrespectful person.
“Why go on the show and not give it 100%? Duka doesn’t deserve this. Uncomfortable to watch @Ofcom.”
Another person said: “The casual xenophobia of not bothering to remember Duka’s name. And tittering with her mate about ‘funny’, belittling versions of it. Can somebody call Ofcom?” followed by an angry face.
Whitney was also accused of trying to gaslight Duka with one person writing online: “Whitney gaslighting Duka get her out,” while another added: “Whitney Gaslighting much? She really is unpleasant.”
