Days Of Our Lives Star Drake Hogestyn Filmed His Final Episode Over Six Months Ago – And It Aired Weeks Before The Late Actor’S Death

The late Drake Hogestyn’s final appearance in Days of Our Lives already aired last month prior to his passing.

The actor, who was known for portraying John Black in the long-running soap opera, made his final appearance in the September 9 episode.

Unbeknownst to viewers, that was his last appearance on TV before he passed away at the age of 70 after a battle with pancreatic cancer on Saturday, just one day before his 71st birthday.

Hogestyn filmed his final scene over half a year ago on February 16 earlier this year, according to Soap Opera Digest.

In the episode tited The Family Man, his character John shared several heartfelt and touching scenes with his grandson Tate (Leo Howard) and his son Brady (Eric Martsolf).

According to TV Line, the episode ‘found John bestowing some grandfatherly advice upon Tate, who was still feeling guilty about accidentally telling Holly that Eric was the drunk driver responsible for her biological father’s death.

‘John couldn’t fully relieve Tate of his guilt, but he brought enough warmth and wisdom to the situation to ease his grandson’s troubles.’

Hogestyn’s final appearance opposite Deirdre Hall, for the last John and Marlena scene, aired even earlier on September 5.

The soap actor’s passing was announced by the show’s social media account Saturday night.

‘It’s with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Drake Hogestyn.’ the statement read.

‘He was thrown the curve ball of his life when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, but he faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination.’

‘After putting up an unbelievable fight, he passed peacefully surrounded by loved ones.’

‘We love him, and we will miss him all the Days of Our Lives’, said the Hogestyn family.

Hogestyn was remembered as ‘the most amazing husband, father, papa and actor.’

Hogestyn first appeared on Days of Our Lives in 1986, and played the character John Black for 38 years, appearing in more than 4,200 episodes.

His on-screen son, Christopher Sean, wrote a touching tribute: ‘I will always love you. You were more than just my tv father, in my eyes you were my dad. Thank you for everything you taught me and the love you gave me. The world lost a true Hero. Miss and love you so much Drake. Rest in Peace Dad.’

Hogestyn’s co-stars shared touching tributes in memory of the late actor in the days following his tragic death.

Stephen Nichols, who plays John’s BFF Patch, called him ‘one of those special souls who exuded joy and a love for life.’

Alison Sweeney, who played his on-screen daughter Samantha ‘Sami’ Brady wrote on X: ‘Drake was an incredible man. He was funny, generous and thoughtful. He cared about every single scene, every person.’
