Someone should have told that to Grey’s Anatomy’s Meredith when she was in love with Derek. Because taking that much BS from someone you care about just hurts too much.
Meredith and Derek had their ups and downs throughout all the time they’ve been together in the show. Every fan remembers the heartbreaking “Pick me, choose me, love me” scene, where Meredith seemed to be at her lowest.
But it turns out there’s another scene that still has fans wondering if Derek was really her true love and if he deserved her in the first place.
Season 5 was not easy for Derek and was probably his darkest time on the show. He was really depressed after losing a pregnant patient during a trial, and also realized his high body count. He started missing work and even missed an operation with the Chief. And it was after that when Chief asked Meredith to talk to Derek.
And to convince her to do it, he whispered that Derek was planning a proposal. So she found Derek drunk in his trailer and accused him of hiding. But instead he just said he wasn’t hiding – he was quitting.
Then he said that since she “wrote the book on quitting, running, and hiding,” she should be able to understand. When she revealed that she knew about the ring, Derek took her engagement ring and, using a baseball bat, hit it out into the forest.
“I absolutely hated Derek in that scene.Yes, he was going through a lot, and he got to be a bit selfish and angry but he was downright cruel to Meredith. And she wasn’t at fault at all. When Meredith was going through a lot, he didn’t even try to be there for her but she was there for him and he cruelly insulted her and blamed her for not being capable of commitment,” Redditor Consistent-Length921 said.
It’s hard to be your best self when you’re feeling down, but intentionally hurting the ones you love is just another level of cruelty. No one deserves that kind of attitude.
In the end, though, Derek finally got his act together and we got our happy couple back… because that’s what happy couples do, right?
