In the Wednesday, February 14 episode of Days of our Lives, romance reigned for Valentine’s Day. Classic couples John and Marlena, as well as Steve and Kayla, reflected on their epic history. Elsewhere, Abe officiated Johnny and Chanel’s wedding in Paulina’s hospital room. On the flip side of things, Alex and Theresa represented a couple on completely different relationship wavelengths.
Surprise Wedding for Johnny and Chanel
With Paulina’s (Jackée Harry) thyroid surgery the morning of Valentine’s Day, Johnny (Carson Boatman) and Chanel (Raven Bowens) decided to surprise her mama with an impromptu hospital wedding. Standing next to her bed, Abe (James Reynolds) officiated the young couple’s second wedding (Boatman talks about Johnny and Chanel’s first wedding here), which was a simple but emotional ceremony.
Complete with white roses populating the room, Abe married Johnny and Chanel. When Paulina asked if the two had personal words to say to each other, they didn’t hold back. Johnny, after saying, “Hello,” let Chanel know that he accepts all of her and that there’s nothing he wouldn’t do for her. So she can give him her “tired feet and burnt donuts.” And he will, in turn, give her, “all my love for the rest of my DAYS.”
Basically, Chanel was in tears, but she managed to convey how much Johnny meant to her. “I give you my hand, I give you my heart, and I give you my love.” And with that, Abe pronounced them husband and wife. Paulina made sure Johnny and Chanel knew this second marriage needed to stick, unlike their first. They agreed wholeheartedly.
Classic Couple Romance and Reflections #1: Steve and Kayla
This wasn’t just Steve (Stephen Nichols) and Kayla’s (Mary Beth Evans) Valentine’s Day, it was also the third anniversary of their Valentine’s Day wedding at The Pub when they got married for the fourth, or technically, fifth time. That is if you include their snow-filled wedding where it was just the two of them exchanging vows.
Of course, Stephanie (Abigail Klein) interrupted, and over a breakfast she cooked for them, the longtime supercouple reminisced about their weddings, including their favorite — their very first wedding. As they reflected on this “joyous and glorious moment,” flashbacks of their epic ceremony played. The two told their daughter of Kayla’s hearing coming back, which made their wedding even more significant.
The show also flashed back to their Valentine’s Day wedding, where Kayla vowed, “to never get tired of looking at your handsome face. For the rest of my life.” Steve and Kayla both agreed that this wedding would be their last. They’d always be together.
Classic Couple Romance and Reflections #2: John and Marlena
Meanwhile, John (Drake Hogestyn) went all out romancing Marlena (Deidre Hall). He set up quite the spread of food and drink (and heaters) in the park, where the two reflected on romantic moments of the past. This included how he bid $100,000 for a dance with her and another time they shared a picnic.
According to John, the touching moments made up for last year’s Valentine’s Day, when they were apart, which was a nice way of saying Marlena was “dead.” In fact, he told his wife how later they’d look at the slideshow Johnny made for them. The one he played for her on the rooftop when she was dying. This way, they can make new memories under different circumstances.
Later, Marlena had her own gift for her husband. She feared it wasn’t as amazing and spectacular as this picnic in the park. But John didn’t care. It was a keychain that said, “Going Home to Doc.” That’s what he does. Whatever madness and insanity happens in their world, John always goes home to Doc. Finally, the two shared another dance, and no $100K was needed.
Nowhere Near the Same Page
Clearly, Theresa (Emily O’Brien) and Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) weren’t on the same page…at all. Theresa expected to get a proposal (she found a ring in his things). Meanwhile, Alex acted as if this day was any other day and not the most romantic day of the year.
While she offered him banana cream waffles a la Donovan, he countered with a walk in the bitter cold. Later, John and Marlena ended up inviting the pair to join them on their picnic. John and Marlena told them stories about their storied love.
However, when Theresa made up an excuse to talk to Marlena alone, she told her how she thought Alex was ready to propose. Marlena asked her if she was sure about this since she knew better. But, Theresa insisted that after finding the ring, he would ask her to marry him. On the flip side, Alex told John how all he was feeling was the pressure to be “intensely romantic.”
Finally, when the two got home, Alex let Theresa know he was heading to work. But they both decided to meet up at The Bistro for a romantic dinner. The expression on Alex’s face didn’t read excitement.
