Commissioner Frank Reagan is one of the most beloved Blue Bloods characters for many reasons, but even his biggest fans claim he should’ve been fired after what he did in the last week’s episode.
Frank Reagan is by now means a bad person: he’s dutiful, sharp, honorable, and reliable.
His presence as the Commissioner largely holds the PD together, and he’s respected both by his colleagues and his family members. No decent person could possibly call him out for anything he did…
And still, he managed to surprise everyone. Everyone knows about the Commissioner’s ancient rivalry with the Mayor, and there’s nothing new about it.
We all know how they feel about each other, but the stunt Frank Reagan pulled off last episode was way too much — and should’ve got him fired, if we think about it objectively.
Rivalry is one thing; purposefully humiliating the Mayor in front of the press is an entirely different story.
Sure, the Mayor agreed to have police officers there, but there was no sound reason to go over the top and hand him the invoice for the “police services” in front of everyone — after all, they are not some goofy rent-a-cops!
Fans can’t get their heads around why Frank decided to escalate things between him and the Mayor so randomly.
Out of nowhere, the war they’ve been having for so long is renewed in the eyes of the press, and it’s only logical to expect the Mayor to counterattack after that humiliating scene.
This type of behavior is completely out-of-character for the much-respected Commissioner Frank Reagan, that’s for sure.
The only justification that comes to mind is that Frank’s just really done with his position and doesn’t want to keep going.
Perhaps, he’s already set his mind on retiring so decided to not hold back his true “love” for the Mayor?.. But still, this feels too far-stretched. Even in light of his upcoming retirement, this is not how Commissioner Reagan holds himself in public.
The potential off-screen reason for Frank’s stunt feels a bit more sound, though: this scene had likely been written way before Blue Bloods got renewed, and this was one of the ways the writers were hedging their bets to wrap up if the show wasn’t renewed in the end…
Which it luckily was. But the scene still remained as it was, and now the audience can’t figure out what the hell got into Commissioner Reagan.
