Although the internet is full of debates about which genre fits Grey’s Anatomy better, drama or soap, there is another contender that might actually take the lead. With all the violence, occasional gore, lots of deaths, and truly horrible decisions the characters make on a daily basis, why not horror?

Here are five Grey’s Anatomy moments so scary they still wake fans up in the middle of the night.

1. Animals Ripping Lexi’s Body

Luckily, the audience didn’t have to see that, but thanks to Sandra Oh’s brilliant performance, Cristina’s monologue was enough to send shivers down your spine. This is a mental image you never want to have stuck in your head, no matter whose body it is, especially not that of a close colleague or friend.

2. Gary Clark Finding Bailey

There’s nothing scarier than being trapped in a building with a shooter with no way to escape. Bailey acted extremely bravely and quickly by helping her patient hide under the sheet and then trying to hide herself, but the fear in her eyes the moment she faced Clark is something no one can forget.

3. Levi’s Patient Bleeding Out

This scene is perhaps the bloodiest in the show, with the entire floor of the operating room covered in the patient’s blood. The waterfall podcast playing in the background only adds eeriness to the heartbreaking moment. All this destruction was caused by a rookie mistake.

4. Derek Cutting Jen Harmon’s Brain

Even the most talented surgeons experience failures, and the Jen Harmon moment is the one Derek may never be able to forget. After doing everything in his power to save this young pregnant woman, he lost his temper and cut into her brain piece by piece. Coming from the usually calm Derek, it was shocking to see.

5. Meredith Realizing John Doe Is George

That moment was as frightening as it was devastating. The realization that hit Meredith’s face as quickly as she was able to process what 007 actually meant and the horror that came almost immediately after she realized how much her friend was suffering are examples of top-notch acting by Ellen Pompeo.
