It was a game of deception on Grey’s Anatomy!
During the March 13 episode, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and her boyfriend Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman) returned to Grey Sloan Memorial to help with a liver transplant for Tasha Lawson, the wife of Catherine Fox’s (Debbie Allen) former student Dr. Evan Moore (Lena Waithe).
Their best-laid plans didn’t work out as Meredith faced the wrath of Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) for keeping Catherine’s medical issues from him earlier in the season. However, when they discovered that Evan had deceived them, their feud was put by the wayside — at least for now.
Read on to find out more about this week’s episode of Grey’s Anatomy, including Link and Jo’s big decision.
Uncovering the Truth
While Meredith and Nick were ready to jump into Tasha’s case, Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) refused to work with her as he was still upset about her hiding Catherine’s health issues from him. He noted that she prefers “to keep her cases close to the vest.”
Catherine wouldn’t let him pull out of the case so easily, saying, “Just stop… I promised them top notch doctors. I promised them A+ care. Make me rescind these promises, and you know what will happen. Put it aside!”
While they continued to butt heads over plans for the surgery, Meredith later asked what Richard wanted her to do instead of protecting Catherine’s privacy and he responded, “I expected you to tell me.”
“And break every oath I’ve ever taken,” she said, as he snapped back, “It hasn’t stopped you before.”
After Meredith admitted that she and Richard weren’t seeing eye to eye, Catherine explained, “When you nurture family, when you train family, the lines become blurred, especially when they use the skills you taught them against you. It hits harder. That means it takes longer to get over.”
Meanwhile, Nick decided to pass on the liver due to its size and delay the surgery. Evan didn’t take kindly to the news, saying, “Every day that goes by is another chance for her liver to fail. We could wait weeks for another match. You might know transplants, I know my wife, she needs this now.”
The scans revealed that Tasha might not be suffering from encephalopathy, but rather she may have had a stroke. When they hatched a plan to scan Tasha’s brain, Richard insisted they needed Evan’s consent.
Evan stood her ground and insisted they move forward with the liver transplant, saying, “She’s deteriorating before my very eyes. I’d do anything to save her, anything.”
However, Meredith and Richard still dug for answers about Tasha’s symptoms. Meredith thought she might have dementia, but Richard requested her full medical records and discovered that she had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago.
“Evan was mentioning Tasha’s recent accomplishments, the awards and books, the public recognition,” he told Meredith. “They made me think of your mother.”
“Do you think Catherine knows about this?” Meredith responded and Richard replied, “You think she doesn’t?”
They then confronted Catherine and asked her about the diagnosis. Meredith said that Evan intentionally left it off the records she gave them, to which Catherine said, “No, she had me vouch for Tasha to the transplant committee, if they had known, they might have made a very different decision.”
“Evan played all of us well,” Catherine added, to which Richard responded, “Well, she learned from the best.” Meredith then pulled Nick from the OR before he could start the surgery.
New Beginnings
After treating a patient named Marlee who jumped off a bridge during her divorce party and broke her spine, Link made a big decision about his own relationship and surprised Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington) with a proposal.
“I love you, you love me, and I know that it takes more than that to make a marriage work, but what do couples who’ve been together for a long time say?” he said. “I married my best friend.”
“That’s us,” he continued. “It’s been us since you sprained your ankle and I dropped you on canon green, since we stayed up all night studying, eating Jimmy’s cheesy bread…It’s still us. You’re my soulmate and years from now, we’ll tell our kids, grandkids that the secret to our marriage is that we were best friends.”
Before he could even pop the question, she said yes and they shared a kiss.
Moving Forward
There was no love lost between Jules Millin (Adelaide Kane) and Simone Griffin (Alexis Floyd) at the intern retreat. Simone couldn’t move past that Jules had yet to apologize for letting her take the blame for a mistake in the OR.
Finally, Jules opened up to the group about what was wrong after arguing with Simone. “We lost a classmate,” she said, referring to Mika Yasuda (Midori Francis) deciding to leave.
“She dropped out of the program, and everybody’s acting like nothing has changed and everything has changed…What’s the point in team bonding if we don’t have a team? Our team is broken,” Jules said as she broke down in tears.
Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson) later found Jules and told her that she understood what was going through. “You’re right. Your team is broken. I want to help fix that,” she said before asking, “Do you?”
After her earlier outburst, Simone offered Jules her airline miles to visit Mika but Jules admitted, “I was trying to plan a visit, but she said she needs space.”
