Newly released images from Grey’s Anatomy season 21 offer a first look at Emmy winner Lena Waithe guest-starring as Dr. Evynn Moore. Created by Shonda Rhimes, the hit ABC series continues its legacy as television’s longest-running primetime medical drama. After an extended winter break, the award-winning show is set to continue its dive into the professional and personal woes of the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital doctors and staff. Grey’s Anatomy season 21 returns to ABC on March 6, airing every Thursday at 10 p.m.
According to Deadline, Waithe is set to join Grey’s Anatomy as the savvy former student of Catherine Fox (Debbie Allen), Dr. Moore, returning to Grey Sloan to assist with a unique case involving her wife, portrayed by Andrea Bordeaux. This storyline is set to unfold over a two-episode arc, beginning with Episode 2110, titled “Jump (for My Love),” scheduled to premiere on March 13.
What Lena Waithe In Grey’s Anatomy Means
A Powerful & Exciting Addition To Grey Sloan
Lena Waithe’s casting marks a rare appearance on a series she hasn’t created or executive produced. As founder of the Hillman Grad production company, Waithe has made a significant impact in Hollywood from behind the camera. She gained widespread acclaim for her work on Netflix’s Master of None, earning a historic Emmy win in 2017 as the first Black woman to take home the award for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series. She also created Showtime’s long-running drama The Chi and wrote the critically acclaimed film Queen & Slim. In 2020, Waithe portrayed Ash in Westworld season 3.
Her role as Dr. Evynn Moore will not only expand Grey’s Anatomy’s guest star lineup but also deepen Catherine Fox’s storyline in season 21. Since her cancer diagnosis, Catherine has been making waves at Grey Sloan. She fired several employees and threatened to sue Meredith Grey, which led to a dramatic confrontation in the season 21 premiere, culminating in a slap from Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson). Fortunately, Dr. Moore could offer a much-needed reality check and may remind her of a time before all the tense power plays.
Our Take On Lena Waithe’s Grey’s Anatomy Debut
A Character That Could Shake Things Up
Waithe’s past work proves she excels at bringing complex, layered characters to life, making her an excellent addition to Grey’s Anatomy’s already dynamic ensemble. Dr. Moore’s arrival at Grey Sloan Memorial feels like just the kind of shake-up the show thrives on. Catherine has been making increasingly bold decisions and having a former student return could be exactly what forces her to take a step back. Whether or not their reunion manifests into a confrontation, it’s bound to add another compelling layer to an especially dramatic season of Grey’s Anatomy.
