Jessie T. Usher discusses Pulse’s connection with Grey’s Anatomy. Pulse is an upcoming medical drama that will focus on the lives of doctors working at a Miami hospital. It features Usher in the role of Sam Elijah, along with other cast members that include Willa Fitzgerald, Justina Machado, Jack Bannon, Colin Woodell, Chelsea Muirhead, Daniela Nieves, and Jessy Yates. The series will be a medical procedural drama produced by Netflix. It does not yet have a release date, but it is expected to be put out this year.
In an interview with ScreenRant, Usher hypes up Pulse. While the actor could not “give away storypoints,” he said that it “has the feel of early Grey’s Anatomy.” He called the series “sexy,” “romantic,” and “dramatic.” He also noted that the show is “polar opposites from The Boys,” one of the actor’s other major series. He said that it is “a nice break” to be playing a character who saves lives in the series. Check out the full quote from Usher below:
Jessie T. Usher: Yeah, Pulse is a medical drama, so Netflix, it’ll be airing sometime this spring. I play Dr. Elijah. I can’t give away storypoints on it, but it has the feel of early Grey’s Anatomy. It’s sexy, and it’s romantic, and it’s dramatic in a lot of ways. It was one heck of an experience. It’s the polar opposites from The Boys, so that was nice. I didn’t realize how dark and twisted my filmmaking mind had been until I got over to a show where we’re saving people instead of killing them. So, it’s just nice to flip the switch. Yeah, it’s a nice break. “Well, we’re sav ing lives instead of taking them. Thank god. Okay, I forgot people still do that on TV.”

What This Means For Pulse
The Grey’s Anatomy Comparison Can Be Good & Bad
Beginning in 2005, Grey’s Anatomy has been one of the longest-running medical shows of all time. The series is well-liked by its fans, who have kept watching all these years. Any new medical series has to compete against this Grey’s legacy. If Pulse has some of the key elements that made Grey’s Anatomy successful to begin with, this could thoroughly help the show succeed when it releases. If it is too similar, though, it could risk being compared in a negative way, but any Grey’s Anatomy-related press is overall good for Pulse.
If Pulse is extremely successful, this could be a big turning point for Netflix. While the company has been arguably the most notable name in streaming over the past several years, it has yet to have a major medical series. More and more networks have been breaking into the genre recently, with HBO’s The Pitt coming out this year and the medical workplace comedy St. Denis Medical performing well on Peacock. Netflix is throwing its hat in the genre ring, and the early reports sound positive.
Our Take On The Early Pulse Description
Timing Will Be Key For The Success Of This Series
The release date will really be key for how much Pulse can succeed. Usher merely states that the Netflix series will be put out “this spring,” without denoting a specific date. Grey’s Anatomy season 21 returns in early March, so a spring release date could very well mean that Pulse’s Netflix debut could coincide with the upcoming Grey’s Anatomy season. Netflix must decide whether they want to give Pulse a more isolated spot or if they want to lean into the two shows’ comparison through a Grey’s Anatomy-adjacent release date.
