Captain Sandy Yawn criticized her fellow Below Deck Mediterranean cast members after they came under fire for their poor performances. So far in Below Deck Med season 9, Captain Sandy hasn’t fired anybody yet. However, that could soon change after she confronted Bri Muller and Elena “Ellie” Dubaich in the most recent episode following their escalating feud. Meanwhile, Johnathan “Jono” Shillingford and Iain Maclean’s performances as chef and bosun, respectively, have been underwhelming, to say the least. Someone (possibly multiple crew members) might be fired soon, but it’s unclear who that person will be.
Below Deck Med ‘s Captain Sandy Yawn called out Johnathan Shillingford and Iain Maclean after they failed to live up to her high expectations.
Captain Sandy and Chief Stew Aesha Scott appeared on Watch What Happens Live to discuss the most recent episode of Below Deck Med season 9. At one point, Sandy played a game called Air Their Dirty Laundry, during which she had to reveal what improvements the cast members need to make. The Below Deck captain said that Iain needs to improve his attitude.
When Chef Jono’s face popped up, Captain Sandy blunty admitted he needed to improve his cooking, which caused a burst of laughter from the studio audience and Aesha, and left WWHL host Andy Cohen with his mouth open in shock. After hearing that reaction, Sandy replied, “I’m sorry. I like him very much. I have to admit he’s a great guy.” As for the other cast members, Sandy didn’t want Bri to let the drama affect her mentally, and Ellie needs to stop talking out of both sides of her mouth. She had no criticisms for Nathan Gallager or Aesha.

Iain Maclean Needs To Show Improvements Or He’ll Be Fired
Elsewhere on Watch What Happens Live, a fan asked Captain Sandy to list three positive attributes about Iain, despite the many issues she’s had with him throughout Below Deck Med season 9. The captain admitted that Iain is a “hard worker” and thinks he “really wants to do a good job.” However, when it came to naming a third positive comment, Sandy had a harder time but simply said, “I need a bosun,” insinuating that Iain is only a Mustique crew member because she needed someone to fill that spot and she had no one else to claim it.
Bravo has aired more than half of Below Deck Med season 9, with not that many episodes to go until the finale. With this many episodes having aired so far, it’s interesting that Captain Sandy hasn’t fired anyone yet, even though multiple cast members have demonstrated poor performances that warrant their dismissal. At the moment, the biggest tension is between Bri and Ellie, with Aesha finally getting the captain involved to help settle the matter. The most recent episode ended on a cliffhanger, with viewers not knowing whether Bri and/or Ellie would be fired.
As a result of Bri and Ellie’s feud, other scandals have somewhat fallen by the wayside. However, Captain Sandy is still exasperated at Iain’s poor skills as a bosun. Other Below Deck Med cast members are noticing his constant failings, and it seems like Sandy is almost ready to fire him. She did pull him aside after the most recent charter to lecture him about needing to improve. If he doesn’t start meeting her high expectations, Sandy better be ready to find a replacement quickly.
Below Deck Mediterranean airs Mondays at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
