Married At First Sight’s expert, Dr. Pepper Schwartz, shared her thoughts on the rumors about the series being scripted, giving viewers an answer once and for all. Throughout her time on MAFS, Dr. Pepper has paired couples together with the help of her fellow experts, working this year alongside Pastor Cal Roberson and Dr. Pia Holec. While the series is known for a low success rate amongst its marriages, the experts have explained that their process for matchmaking doesn’t always mean that the couples they put together will be able to make things work beyond their time on the series. Despite some failure, Dr. Pepper is proud of her work.
As Married At First Sight season 17 continues, Screen Rant sat down with Dr. Pepper to discuss what’s happened, what’s ahead, and whether or not the series is scripted. Though some watching the series find it hard to believe, Dr. Pepper shared that MAFS is “100% not scripted, and all three of us [experts] – I can only speak for myself, but all three of us, we have long careers that far pre-date the show.” With credentials in all different areas of relationships and human behavior, the experts work hard to provide MAFS participants with the best possible experience.

Dr. Pepper shared that she doesn’t love hearing the criticism for the show overall, but understands that it comes with the territory of being a reality TV series. “I’m just saying, it isn’t scripted and it never has been,” Dr. Pepper explained. “We try our best. That being said, marriage is hard, these circumstances are demanding.” Getting married sight unseen is nerve-wracking enough, and doing so in front of a camera is even scarier for the Married At First Sight cast members. This could explain why MAFS season 17 saw the series’ first runaway bride. After some serious consideration, the experts chose to take a chance.
While there have already been two marriages dissolve during Married At First Sight season 17, Dr. Pepper reassured that viewers have a lot to look forward to in the upcoming episodes. As the season continued, it was revealed that Michael, who was left at the altar, would get another chance at marriage with a second participant, Chloe. While Micahel and Chloe’s relationship has yet to be seen on Married At First Sight, it appears the couple make it down the aisle and actually try their relationship, unlike his original bride. Though there’s still a chance Michael and Chloe’s marriage may not work out, they’ll both get the chance to try.
With Dr. Pepper reassuring viewers that Married At First Sight has been real since the very beginning, it’s possible that moving into the show’s next season, the rumors can be put to rest. With scenarios that sometimes feel fantastical, it can be difficult to believe everything MAFS puts on the table, but the matchmaking on the series and the care that goes into it is clearly filled with effort. After years of debate surrounding Married At First Sight, one of the major questions about the series can finally be put in the past.
