Like Many In Salem Before Her, Holly Jonas Lives Her John Hughes Days

We already knew Days of our Lives writers had a thing for John Hughes’s movies. Leo noted that Sloan Petersen shared a name with Ferris Bueller’s girlfriend. Dr. Rolf was just picking up where the boys from Real Genius left off. Rachel could give that Home Alone demon a run for his money when it comes to destroying the world to get what she wants, and, goodness knows, some baby is always having a day out. (Currently, it’s the missing little Jude, but just last month it was kidnapped Victoria.) But what really drove the metaphor home was Holly Jonas’s Christmas dilemma.

Holly Jonas: Birthday Blues

Holly (Ashley Puzemis) was left all alone on her birthday. Just like Molly Ringwald in Sixteen Candles! And, just like in Sixteen Candles, it made no sense. Sure, in Sixteen Candles it made sense that everybody forgot Molly’s birthday on the day of her sister’s wedding.

But back when they were plann ing a date for the wedding, did no one say, “Hey, that’s Molly’s birthday!” Same thing here: Yes, Nicole (Arianne Zucker) is so broken up over losing her newborn son that she let EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) whisk her away from Salem. But, at no point after she got in the car or arrived at the inn, did Nicole look at her phone, see the date, and think, “Hey, why does that ring a bell? Isn’t that Holly’s birthday?”

Happy Ending

Of course, Molly got the boy of her dreams — and a cake — to kiss her because of the oversight. Holly got a cake, too. But no kiss. So she got drunk. Which prompted Johnny (Carson Boatman) to come running. Molly got a boy by playing damsel in distress, and now so has Holly. Great lesson to teach young people. Whether by John Hughes…or DAYS.
